Meet Dr. Kelvin J. Washington, Ph.D.

Husband. Father. Educator. Coach. Community Leader.

Rooted in Waynesboro

Kelvin J. Washington, known to many as "KJ," is a proud resident of Waynesboro, born and raised in the community he now seeks to serve on the local School Board. Growing up in Ward C and attending William Perry Elementary School, he learned early the life-changing impact that strong schools and dedicated educators can have on a child's future. His mother served as an instructional aide at Westwood Elementary School, giving him firsthand insight into the commitment and sacrifice of those who work every day to support students and families.

A graduate of Waynesboro High School with an Advanced Diploma, Dr. Washington excelled academically as an Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment student, earning college credit while still in high school before continuing his educational journey.

A Commitment to Education

Education has remained central to Dr. Washington's life and calling. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Leadership and Biblical Exposition, a Master of Divinity, a Master of Theology, and a Doctorate of Theological Studies (Ph.D.). His pursuit of higher education reflects a lifelong commitment to learning, leadership, and preparing future generations for success.

Experience That Matters

Professionally, Dr. Washington has served in both education and administration, including work on the administrative team of a private school in Richmond, Virginia. There, he focused on student retention and strengthening partnerships between schools and families through initiatives such as home-visit parent-teacher conferences. His experiences reinforced his commitment to helping schools avoid many of the challenges impacting education today.

As an educator, he has taught students at both the secondary and post-secondary levels, including undergraduate and graduate education. He has also served on the board of a school of divinity, helping develop policies and procedures for institutional advancement, while contributing his leadership as a member of the Waynesboro Family YMCA Board.

Investing in the Next Generation

Dr. Washington believes leadership extends beyond the classroom. As a youth soccer coach at Waynesboro High School, he has invested in developing character, discipline, teamwork, and confidence in young people. Throughout the pandemic, he also helped organize and operate a community food pantry that provided meals twice each week to families at William Perry Elementary and Wenonah Elementary, continuing his longstanding commitment to serving Waynesboro beyond words.
